Christiaan van Heijst was born in 1983 in the Netherlands and from an early age was drawn to the sky. At 12 years old he decided he wanted to be a pilot. One of the most frequently asked questions Christiaan receives is: “Have you ever seen anything weird or unexplainable in the air”. The answer is: “Yes.”

Following a recent visit to The National Archives in Kew Gardens, London, I thought it would be good to let people know what I found in relation to the ongoing investigation into the 1990 Calvine case. For those of you who are not familiar with it, it concerns a diamond-shaped object which was alleged to have hovered near a hill close to the village of Calvine, some 35 miles north-west of Perth in central Scotland, at around 9pm on the evening of 4th August 1990.

The death of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, aged 99 on 9 April 2021 resulted in a flurry of tributes and obituaries. But so far none of the extensive media coverage has mentioned the Duke’s lifelong interest in UFOs – or “flying saucers“.

September 2022 marks the 70th anniversary of an unexplained sighting that confounded the Royal Air Force and led the British government to ‘take the UFO seriously’ for the first time.

The recent release of 53 US Navy “Range Fouler Debrief Forms” by the US Department of Defense is a rather significant, if not earth-shattering development.

The question of how and why the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) have decided to officially investigate the issue of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP), historically known as Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs), is one filled with vast complexities.

“So, we're supposed to - I'm supposed to - get a report in the next, I think, month or two. They briefed our staff but it wasn't very significant, not a lot of information.”

Arguably the most fascinating British ‘UFO’ case in the last 35 years took place on a remote Scottish hillside one evening in August 1990. For years it has perplexed those who have looked into it, and not only due to the mysterious nature of the craft which was observed.

British Rail, the state-owned company that owned most of the country’s rail network and rolling stock, submitted a design for a flying saucer in the 1970s. Yes, you heard that right.

Within the MOD UFO files civil servants, intelligence officers and military staff debate how the British Government should respond to growing public interest in the phenomena and what they called ‘the media’s obsession with UFOs’.

In his UK Restricted minute ‘Wrap Up of UAP Material’ dated 22 March 2000 the report’s author – a retired RAF scientist – refers to a collection of slides and photographs that he consulted in the MoD’s archive. These contained images of the ‘ASTRA/AURORA‘ project – a top secret, hypersonic Cold War spyplane.

British concerns about a ‘possible stealthy platform flying in UK airspace’ are mentioned in a letter – originally classified Secret – sent by the UK’s Air Attache, Air Commodore Simon Baldwin to Sir Donald Spiers, The Controller of Aircraft at MoD Main Building in London early in December. It says the British had informally passed on their concerns to the Pentagon and had now received ‘more definite information on the source of the sighting’.

The “Calvine incident” was described ‘as one of the most intriguing in the Ministry of Defence’s files’ in Nick Pope’s book Open Skies, Closed Minds, however, no one in the UFO community had heard of the photographs and, up to that point, no media source had ever published stories about them.

During the 1930s British scientists working on a ‘death ray’ discovered that when radio waves from a transmitter struck targets such as aircraft, ships and buildings they bounced back and could be detected by a receiver.

Interesting claims are emerging from researcher Douglas Johnson who has reported that an intelligence officer by the name of Dr. Sean Kirkpatrick has been appointed as the new leader of the Airborne Object Identification and Management Synchronization Group (AOIMSG) – the Pentagon’s effort to investigate Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) issue.

Congressional hearings into UAP will be heard by the House Intelligence Counterterrorism, Counterintelligence and Counterproliferation Subcommittee. This announcement caught many commentators by surprise with the prospect of further revelations regarding UAP. But what will actually transpire?

On September 4th, 1971, on board a twin-engine Aero Commander F680 aeroplane, an automated camera captured an image of a “flying saucer” which to this day has never been successfully debunked.

This isn’t a screenplay, this isn’t some obscure plot-line to some X-Files episode or bargain basement conspiracy. This is the backstory to a Pentagon UFO program which has played out over the past 4 years on blogs and within the UAP research community.
